Blue and White for Aye: Navy Blue Skirts Launch a New Trend
For years, most students have put on their plaid skirt and navy polo every morning. But now a new style is gaining traction: many students are swapping the standard look for a navy skirt paired with a white polo.
The navy skirt has been a uniform option for many years, but until recently, Upper Schoolers rarely wore it. Now, students like Evie Shepherd ’29 enjoy it more than the plaid because “it’s simpler and more versatile.”
In addition to personal preference, some students use the navy skirt as a way to build community by matching with their friends. Shepherd commented, “[The skirts] are a fun way for me and my friends to connect."
Furthermore, many students enjoy being able to add variety to their uniform. Merritt Feldner ’27 said, “It’s fun to try to make our uniform more interesting and unique, especially as we all usually look pretty similar.”
Another emerging trend among students is wearing the navy skirt on Wednesdays. Feldner invited others to “join in for ‘White Polo Wednesdays,’ or WPWs, this year.”
Upper School Dean of Students Rachel Lowenthal is also excited about this trend. She appreciated that “there are options in the same color palette that allow more choice for students depending on the season and activities they are engaged in.”
Lowenthal also recalled her earlier concern that students were unaware of the different uniform choices. By introducing assemblies about the uniform, she “hoped to ... remind students of their multiple options” and is now “[enjoying] seeing [students] taking advantage of them.”
The rise of the navy skirt is garnering enthusiasm for many students and teachers. Lowenthal described the skirts as “a new style wave at Holton” and hopes this wave “will happen with corduroy pants come wintertime.”
