Taking place from January 12th to Feb 1st, the Australian Open (AO) is one of the most anticipated tennis tournaments, with players coming from all over the world to Melbourne, Australia for the first major tournament of the calendar year and one of four Grand Slam events, according to the Australian Open’s website.

Craig Tiley, the director of the Open, stated that “this year's AO could mark a defining moment in sports history.”

Fans are anticipating a heated matchup between the number-one ranked Carlos Alcaraz and returning two-time champion Jannik Sinner (“ESPN”). Alcaraz is chasing his career Grand Slam, a title given to players who have won each of the four major tournaments.

As reported by “Britannica,” Sinner is striving for a three-time consecutive championship at the Australian Open, only ever accomplished by Novak Djokovic.

Tiley said, “We’re witnessing the birth of what could be the greatest rivalry tennis has ever seen” (“Australian Open” website).

Novak Djokovic, number four in the world, is also eager for another victory in Melbourne.

He has 10 Australian Open titles, and another would make him the oldest singles champion in the history of the tournament (“Britannica”).

According to “ESPN,” the top three ranked women, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek and Coco

Gauff, are fighting for the singles championship.

A win for Swiatek would complete her career Grand Slam, but she has steep competition. “Any one of them could dominate 2026,” predicted Tiley (“Australian Open” website).

On how Holton play

ers can benefit from watching major tournaments, jv tennis coach Suzanne Carter noted that, beyond the excitement of the games, “you can learn if you pay at- tention to the players' bodies ... If you want to improve your game, watch what the pros do before they hit the

ball. Take in their feet, their hips and how they use their free arm.”

She continued, “You will see how much goes into shot preparation to hit the perfect shot. This creates rhythm in the game.”

Varsity tennis player Paisley Fromer ’28 stated, “By watching tournaments, you can see how the game is played at a professional level, and you can implement the pros strategies into your own game.”
