This summer, an exciting new sporting event comes to the DC area. The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Club World Cup 2025 is a new prime club soccer tournament that will run from June to July. Thirty-two of the world’s top teams, including those from the international leagues, will compete in the USA.
According to FIFA, the tournament will consist of a group stage composed of eight groups of four teams playing in a “round-robin format.” The top two teams per group will move on to the next round with 16 teams. Lastly, there will be a "single-match" knockout stage to the final.
Soccer fans in the DMV can look forward to Audi Field, the beloved home of DC United, hosting three of the games taking place on Wednesday, June 18th (Al Ain FC v Juventus FC); Sunday, June 22nd (FC Salzburg v Al Hilal); and Thursday, June 26th (Wydad AC v Al Ain FC).
Soccer is important to many members of the community. Upper school art teacher Ben Ferry stated, “Soccer is everything to me. It has provided so much for me and helped me establish everything from work ethic to lifelong friendships. The sport is that common bond you have between other cultures and nationalities.”
Tournaments such as the FIFA Club World Cup help to promote these bonds as soccer fans from around the world gather to watch the games.
Varsity soccer player Lauren Hemann ’27 intends to watch the tournament in person this summer. She hopes that "in the future Holton could do viewing parties for other soccer tournaments that would engage people who may not have watched it otherwise.”
