“I have a purpose. If you think that it's some kind of blessing, it's not. It means I have an obligation to see a very specific thing through, and with that obligation comes sacrifice.” These are the words of Marty Mauser, the lead character in Josh Safdie’s most recent A24 film “Marty Supreme.”

Mauser, inspired by the late table tennis player Marty Reisman, embodies ambition throughout the film. As film critic Amy Nicholson stated in the Los Angeles Times, Mauser’s reckless personality matches the quickness of the story, which “keeps pace… with a pingpong ball [which can] travel over 70 miles an hour.”

The movie follows a young, lower-class Jewish-American man in the 1950s who aspires to become a world-champion table tennis player. In this pursuit, he finds himself in many unexpected predicaments, from relationship issues to bankruptcy. Overall, all these events lead him to “borrow, steal, cheat, sweet-talk, and hustle his way to the top,” NPR wrote.

The movie features famous Hollywood faces, such as Timothée Chalamet, Fran Drescher, Odessa A’zion, Tyler the Creator, and Gwyneth Paltrow. Upper School science teacher Rachel Lowenthal remarked that Chalamet’s acting in the film “really showcased his versatility as an actor and willingness to try different things.”

Furthermore, the film’s unique advertising also contributed to its popularity. Noor Poshni ’27 said that she enjoyed “Chalamet [collaborating] with EsDeeKid,” a British rapper. She also recalled seeing “so many celebrities… posting themselves wearing the iconic Marty Supreme jacket,” which further cultivated her interest in the film.

Beyond its trendy image, the film explores complex themes of class struggle, the American Dream, and sacrifice. Dorothy Andama ’28 noticed “the American Dream, hints [of] World War II… and Marty’s life [being] different [from] most other pingpong players as a Jewish-[American].”

Additionally, Gabby Burashe ’27 appreciated the film’s emphasis on “perseverance…while [caring] about others.” Carrington Viot ’29 also noted that the movie addresses the consequences of “being crazily obsessed with achieving a dream to the point where it causes awful decision [making].”

Although the film’s ending remains controversial among viewers, many fans do agree on one thing: the plot and soundtrack are outstanding.
