As the weather gets colder and the leaves start to fall, the Washington Capitals hope to carve their way to a championship season. Coming off last year's triumph, the Caps have big expectations to meet. The regular season began on October 8, 2025, as the Caps kicked off the eight-month whirlwind period with a home game against the Boston Bruins.

Since the Washington Capitals have had several seasons with winning records, the draft picks have tended to be lower in the Draft Lottery. While some Caps fans could be worried about the performance of the new draft picks, this apprehension does not extend to Ryan Leonard, the Caps’ most notable new rookie to hit the ice.

Harper Lanpher ’28 said, “I think all of us lifetime Caps fans are excited to see what Ryan Leonard will bring to the team, especially after watching him in World Juniors and at Boston Col- lege.” With his dynamic style of play and his undeniable skill with the stick, fans expect him to continue to grow into his spot on the team and begin to generate more scoring opportunities on the ice.

Lindy Phillips ’27 shared that she is excited to see what the Caps can do this season after the gift of great veteran players and a fantastic spot in the preseason poll, number two in the Metropolitan Division.

Holton’s resident hockey guru and coach Emily Wilde shared that she anticipates going to games this season. She stated, “We already got tickets to two games over Thanksgiving break.”

When asked about Alex Ovechkin, she said, “It was really fun to watch Ovechkin get the record last year, and I think his success will generate even more support for the Capitals this season. Breaking the record gave the Caps a lot of momentum at the end of last season. This is the last year of Ovechkin's contract, and I'm curious to see if this is actually his last season!”

It is safe to say the community is excited for the first puck drop.
