Many people know Director of Middle School and Upper School Choirs Dr. Yee Von Ng for her love of TikTok Shop and Crocs, but there is still much to learn about this dedicated teacher.

In preparation for classes, she goes through her music and plans what she wants to work on that day with Collaborative Pianist Dr. Iris Cheng. Together, they set up the chairs and risers in the room for class.

Ng meets with directors from other schools in the area as well to plan for the Independent Schools Choir Festival in the spring.

She also answers emails from parents and administrators. Ng shared that she hopes to incorporate more solfege into her lesson plans in the coming months.

When asked about what her daily schedule looks like during concert week, Ng jovially answered, “I don’t think I slept during concert week.”

She usually starts her morning off with a cup of coffee before leaving around 7 am for school, where she begins setting the stage and going through her scores. She then checks to make sure all of the choirs’ dresses are hung neatly in the dressing rooms.

Ng is the principal pianist at Strathmore, where she works from 5 pm to 9 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays. She also teaches private voice lessons after school.

In addition to her musical interests, Ng is a crystal hobbyist. She watches TikTok Live, where people sell their crystal or beaded jewelry. She often purchases bracelets and necklaces for the Upper and Middle School Choirs.

She commented that she has made many friends through these TikTok Lives, and once she even attempted to create a TikTok Live herself, but it was too confusing.

In response to her favorite part of teaching Upper School Chorus, Ng re- plied that she enjoys watching the students grow and getting to bond with them.

She then added that she loves the “one Holton sound - it never changes, every year.” Thinking ahead to the Spring, Ng is working to prepare the Upper School and Middle School Choruses for their final

performances of the year.
